A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as an artificial tooth root. They are usually made of titanium. Titanium is a biocompatible material, which allows the implant to permanently fuse with your jawbone. The result is a strong and stable foundation for your replacement teeth.
The dental implant placement process requires time and patience, but you can rest assured knowing that our team will be with you every step of the way. Our team of dentists can perform every part of the dental implant placement procedure right here in our office, making the treatment more convenient. Although the tooth replacement process will vary from patient to patient, there are four basic steps everyone goes through.
The initial consultation is the most important part of the entire dental implant placement process. Why? Because it allows us to fully examine your mouth and teeth and to become familiar with your health condition. Based on this, we create a detailed plan. For the initial consultation, you will need a Cone Beam CT scan (CBCT). We will recommend you get this scan done at the Promax clinic. Promax is about 500 meters from our office, and you will receive a discount there when we refer you.
We will also take digital impressions of your teeth, gums, and jaw using an intraoral scanner. Once we gather all the data, we see if the bone needs to be 'strengthened' a bit or the gums thickened before we place the implant. We plan all of this on the computer to ensure the new tooth fits as it should.
When you are ready for the procedure, the doctor will administer anesthesia so you don't feel any pain, and we will carefully place that small titanium screw - the implant - into your jaw. After that, we suture the gums and wait a few months for it to heal nicely. In some cases, we may even be able to make a temporary tooth immediately.
The implant needs to fuse with your bone. This process is called osseointegration and lasts from 2-6 months. Once this is complete, you will have a strong, stable base on which your prosthetic work can stand for years.
This is the final step! You receive your new tooth (crown, bridge, or denture) which is custom-made for you in a dental laboratory. After that, you transition into our maintenance program, because we want your new teeth to last for years and to be trouble-free.
